Designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1955, the Tabouret Berger is a compact, purposeful design inspired by the humble milking stools found in rural and alpine settings. True to Perriand’s belief that good furniture should grow out of everyday life, the piece is defined by clarity of form, honest materials, and thoughtful proportions.
This example, produced by Cassina as part of the authorized 2011 reintroduction, is crafted in black-stained solid oak. Smaller and lighter in scale than the Tabouret Méribel, the Berger stool has a low, grounded presence that feels both practical and sculptural. The black stain sharpens its silhouette, giving the stool a more graphic character while allowing the grain of the oak to remain visible.
Its three-legged construction provides natural stability, and the gently contoured seat speaks to its functional origins. Easy to move and easy to place, the Tabouret Berger works well as a low stool, side table, or accent piece. In black-stained oak, it offers a subtle contrast—rustic in spirit, but refined in finish.
Unassuming and versatile, this stool captures the essence of Perriand’s work: design rooted in use, shaped by tradition, and made for daily living rather than display. Measures 13” dia x 10.5”
